Coffee Cards Thank People Who Chose Wisdom Over Risk
A small note of appreciation reminds us that wisdom can be practical, humble, and lifesaving.
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
James 1:5— NLT

A volunteer group has been leaving $5 coffee gift cards on cars parked outside bars overnight, thanking people for choosing not to drive drunk. The effort was highlighted in a Reddit UpliftingNews post and has reportedly spread to six states.
The gesture is meant to encourage people who leave their cars behind after a night out, so they return the next morning to a small note of appreciation — a quiet reward for choosing safety over risk.
Most drunk-driving prevention efforts lean on warnings, penalties, and fear. Those things matter because the stakes are real: one reckless decision behind the wheel can change lives forever. But there is something unexpectedly tender about this approach. Instead of scolding someone for being outside a bar, the volunteers notice the moment when a person made the harder, wiser choice — and simply say, “Thank you.”
That feels close to the spirit of James 1:5. Wisdom, in this verse, is not treated like something God gives with a disappointed sigh. It is something He gives generously, without rebuke. There is grace in that. Sometimes wisdom looks noble and polished. Other times it looks like leaving your car in a parking lot overnight because you knew you should not drive it home.
A $5 coffee card will not solve every dangerous choice. But it may strengthen the kind of humility that saves lives: the willingness to call a ride, hand over the keys, or admit, “I shouldn’t drive tonight.” And maybe that is what makes this small gesture worth noticing. Wisdom grows best not only when foolishness is punished, but when good choices are seen, named, and encouraged.
Today's Prayer
Lord, thank You for the wisdom that protects lives in ordinary, practical moments. Give us the humility to choose safety over pride, and help our communities notice and encourage wise decisions when they happen. Amen.
