Oregon’s Data Center Rate Hike Raises an Older Question of Fairness

Oregon approved a utility rate change under the POWER Act that raises electricity bills for data centers by 30% while reducing residential electricity costs by 1.3%. The change applies to large developments that use more than 20 megawatts of power.
The policy is intended to shift more electricity-related costs toward high-demand users as data centers place growing pressure on regional power grids. Regulators are reconsidering how infrastructure and energy costs should be assigned when some customers require far more power than others.
Utility pricing is not usually where we look for moral clarity. But this Oregon decision raises a question every family, business, and community eventually has to face: who carries the cost when one person’s demand affects everyone else? A data center drawing more than 20 megawatts is not the same as a household keeping the lights on and the refrigerator running. Treating them as if they are the same may look equal on paper, but it may not tell the whole truth.
That is what makes Psalm 119:160 feel unexpectedly relevant here. “The sum of your word is truth” reminds us that righteousness begins with seeing things as they really are. Fairness is not always a flat line where everyone pays the same share. Sometimes fairness means asking harder questions: Who benefits? Who pays? What burdens have been hidden inside a system because no one named them clearly?
This does not mean every policy decision is perfect because it claims fairness as its goal. Human rules need scrutiny, humility, and revision. But the verse points us toward a steadier standard: truth is more than data, and righteousness is more than efficiency. In a world where technology moves faster than our habits of responsibility, we need rules that do more than keep the lights on. We need rules honest enough to notice who is carrying the load.
