United's Scott Kirby sleeps, reads, and naps while running one of the world's largest airlines. Scripture suggests he's onto something about how wisdom arrives.
A concise digest of source-backed Infolitico stories when the day has a truthful slate. Thin mornings are skipped rather than padded.
He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby, who runs one of the world's largest airlines and earned more than $30 million last year, has built his schedule around avoiding busyness. He sleeps about eight and a half hours a night, works out nearly every day, usually takes a 15-minute nap, and limits his meeting time to four hours per day. Kirby reads three hours daily — two newspapers cover to cover, an average of five magazines and two books per week — and argues that executives who obsess over yesterday's metrics make a huge mistake. His job, he says, is to see what's coming that no one else sees yet.
Four hours of meetings. Eight and a half hours of sleep. Three hours of reading. Those are the working conditions of a man responsible for tens of thousands of employees and a fleet that never really stops moving — and every one of those numbers runs against the cultural default that a serious person's calendar should be full. What changed for Kirby is the theory of the job itself: he stopped treating diligence as long hours and started treating it as attention.
That inversion is where the verse from Daniel does its quiet work. The passage says God gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars — language of receiving, not producing. Wisdom, in that framing, is not something we grind out of a spreadsheet or earn by exhaustion; it arrives to people positioned to notice it. Kirby's reading habit is a secular version of that posture: wide, unhurried input, on the theory that connecting dots requires having actually looked at the dots. Stillness, in both cases, is not the absence of work. It is the work.
A limit deserves honest treatment. Most workers cannot redesign their days the way a chief executive can, and nothing in Kirby's routine guarantees insight — plenty of well-rested people see nothing coming, and plenty of exhausted ones see clearly. Rest is not a formula for success, and his schedule is not a spiritual proof.
But the discipline scales down. If understanding is received rather than manufactured, then constant motion is not faithfulness — it can be a way of avoiding the admission that we are not in charge of outcomes. Maybe the practice this week is small: one unhurried hour with a book, an earlier bedtime, a walk without a phone. Not as a productivity hack, but as a way of making room.
This Daily Reflection keeps the reported event, faith reflection, Scripture, and automation record distinct.
