Poland Warns Russia's War Plans May Reach Its Allies — What Peace Can We Actually Rest On?

Two details in this report sit side by side, and the gap between them is worth sitting with. Poland scrambled military planes when a Russian attack struck western Ukraine near its border. At the same time, Warsaw is warning that the war's plans may already include its allies. In other words, a nation is doing everything a nation can do — watching, warning, responding — while openly admitting that what it fears may come anyway.

That gap between our best efforts and our actual security is where the psalm does its most surprising work. Notice what the psalmist does not say. He does not say he will lie down and sleep because the danger is far away, or because his defenses are strong. He says it while danger is plainly near — and the reason he gives is not the absence of threat but the presence of a keeper. The safety he rests on is not the same kind of safety the powers around him can threaten.

We should be careful with that line, though. It is not a promise that missiles will miss, and it is not permission to stop paying attention. Governments bear a real duty to protect their people, and Poland's vigilance is part of that duty, not a failure of faith. What the verse exposes instead is a burden we often place on ourselves: we act as though our ability to rest must wait until the world's peace holds. It never fully holds — not between nations, not in our own towns, not in our own households.

So the question is not whether the threat is real. It is where we locate the peace that lets a frightened person close their eyes at night. That peace was never ultimately held by air defenses or alliances, and when peace between nations grows thin, that may be the only ground left that does not move. Tonight, before checking the news one last time, we might try what the psalmist did: lie down anyway, and name the One who keeps watch while we cannot.
