A scholar argues digital systems deserve the care we give water and power. A familiar proverb asks something of us, too.

How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!
Writing in an essay republished by Fast Company, Francine Berman — former director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center and cofounder of the international Research Data Alliance — argues that the digital technology everyone depends on should be treated as critical infrastructure, alongside food and water systems, roads and bridges, and financial and health systems. She points to past infrastructure failures as the standard digital systems should be held to: lead seepage poisoned Flint, Michigan's water supply in 2014, and nearly all of Puerto Rico lost power on New Year's Eve in 2024 — events after which the public expects risks to be mitigated and problems addressed. Safeguards such as transparency about how search algorithms rank content, more user control over social media feeds, and clearer disclosure of how personal data is used could reduce risks like misinformation, manipulation, and exploitation, she argues — a shift requiring changes in how both public and private sectors build, regulate, and use these systems.
Berman's most quietly radical move is a comparison. We would never accept a restaurant that hid its health inspection grade, yet millions of us use search engines and feeds every day whose ranking priorities are invisible to us — and we've learned to shrug. She calls it digital resignation: the moment we stop believing our judgment matters. What changed is that these tools quietly became as essential as water and power. What did not change is that we still treat them as optional conveniences we simply consume.
That resignation is a spiritual condition before it is a technical one. The verse flips the digital economy's own ranking system: wisdom outranks gold, and good judgment outranks silver. An economy that ranks content by commercial advantage and attention has, in effect, priced judgment out of the market. What we seek and how we evaluate it is worth more than what the attention economy monetizes — which means a search result is not just information delivered but a test of whether we will still exercise care.
The essay offers proposals, not a proven fix, and transparency alone will not purify the public square. But stewardship of shared systems starts smaller than regulation. This week, practice one act of digital judgment: before you trust a search result or a feed, pause and ask how it was shaped — and treat your attention as something entrusted to you rather than something owed to an algorithm.
